A Connecticut chemical manufacturer has admitted it lied to federal and state regulators about the amount of hazardous waste on its property and has agreed to pay $1 million in fines and restitution.

The penalty proposed against Vanderbilt Chemical Corp. of Bethel, Conn., would be one of the largest ever assessed in the country for criminal violation of hazardous waste regulations, said Andrew Lauterback, an attorney for the Environmental Protection Agency.Vanderbilt, a wholly owned subsidiary of the R.T.
